Playthrough is the most misunderstood rule in US social sweepstakes. It decides when your free Sweeps Coins become eligible for a prize, and it explains why your total balance and your redeemable balance are often different numbers.
What Playthrough Means
A playthrough requirement (sometimes called turnover) is the amount of Sweeps Coin gameplay needed before coins become eligible for redemption. It is written as a multiple:
- 1x playthrough: each coin must be used in play once.
- 3x playthrough: each coin must be used in play three times.
The requirement applies to Sweeps Coins however you receive them: the signup bonus, daily rewards, the free mail-in Alternative Method of Entry (AMOE), or the complimentary Sweeps Coins included with an optional Gold Coin package.
Why Platforms Require It
Playthrough is not set by any statute. It is an operator rule published in each platform’s Sweeps Rules, and it serves two purposes:
- It keeps the promotion a game. Sweeps Coins are entries into a promotional sweepstakes. Requiring them to be used in play prevents free entries from being converted straight into prizes without taking part.
- It limits abuse. Without it, accounts could collect free coins and redeem them immediately, which platforms treat as a fraud and anti-money-laundering risk.
The Math
1x playthrough
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Sweeps Coins received | 25 SC |
| Requirement (1x) | 25 × 1 = 25 SC of gameplay |
| Example: 0.50 SC per spin | 25 ÷ 0.50 = 50 spins |
Every Sweeps Coin you play counts toward the total, whether a spin returns a prize or not. Prizes won from played-through coins are generally redeemable once the requirement is met, but the exact treatment of winnings depends on each platform’s rules.
3x playthrough
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Sweeps Coins received | 25 SC |
| Requirement (3x) | 25 × 3 = 75 SC of gameplay |
| Example: 0.50 SC per spin | 75 ÷ 0.50 = 150 spins |
A higher multiple means more gameplay before redemption, and more exposure to the game’s built-in return rate along the way. At a game returning 96% on average, playing through 75 SC would be expected to use about 3 SC more than playing through 25 SC (4% × 50 SC of extra play). That is why the multiple matters as much as the size of a free-coin offer.
Redeemable vs Unredeemable Balances
Most platforms split your Sweeps Coins balance into two parts:
| Balance type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Unredeemable (or “unplayed”) | Coins that still need to meet the playthrough requirement |
| Redeemable | Coins that have met the requirement and are eligible for a prize, subject to the minimum threshold and verification |
Your redemption request is always measured against the redeemable figure, not the total.
Tracking Your Progress
- Open the redemption or wallet page. Most platforms show redeemable and total Sweeps Coins side by side.
- Check the transaction history. Each Sweeps Coin credit (signup, daily reward, AMOE, package bonus) usually appears as a separate line, so you can see when coins were added.
- Compare after each session. Your redeemable figure should rise as gameplay counts toward the requirement.
- Ask support if numbers don’t add up. Note the dates and amounts of each credit before contacting them.
How Platforms Compare
| Platform | Playthrough | Minimum cash prize | Review |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stake.us | 3x on Stake Cash | Approx. 40–50 SC (crypto) | Stake.us review |
| Chumba Casino | 1x on Sweeps Coins | 100 SC (10 SC gift card) | Chumba Casino review |
Rules change, so check each platform’s current Sweeps Rules. For a side-by-side view, see Stake.us vs Chumba. If your redemption is stuck even after meeting playthrough, see why redemptions stay pending.
Frequently asked questions
What does a 1x playthrough mean?
Each Sweeps Coin must be used in play once before it becomes eligible for prize redemption. If you receive 10 Sweeps Coins, you need to play through 10 Sweeps Coins of gameplay before those coins, or what they win, can be redeemed.
Is playthrough a legal requirement for sweepstakes?
No law sets a specific multiple. Playthrough is a platform rule set out in each operator's Sweeps Rules. It helps stop free coins being redeemed straight away without being used in the promotional game.
Do all sweepstakes platforms use 1x playthrough?
No. 1x is common, for example at Chumba Casino, but some platforms set higher multiples. Stake.us requires Stake Cash to be played through 3x.
Does Gold Coin play count toward playthrough?
No. Gold Coins are for entertainment play only and have no prize value, so only Sweeps Coin gameplay counts toward the requirement.
